She became the second poet in history to speak at a presidential inauguration -- after Robert Frost, who spoke at John F. Kennedy's inaugural -- when she read her poem "On the Pulse of Morning" at the swearing-in of President Bill Clinton in 1993
Angelou died on the morning of May 28, 2014, according to a family statement. She was found dead by her caregiver. She had reportedly been in poor health and had canceled recent scheduled appearances.
Tributes were paid by Barack Obama, and Bill Clinton. Harold Augenbraum, from the National Book Foundation, said that Angelou's "legacy is one that all writers and readers across the world can admire and aspire to."
